It's a hat-trick now. The third Friday in succession witnesses the release of A WEDNESDAY. And mark my words, it's the most powerful film to come out of Bollywood in 2008.


Most promos mislead the viewer no end. They promise the moon, the viewer is hooked and very often, they fail to meet the expectations. In this case, the promos are just the tip of the iceberg. This movie has so much to offer than a few vital glimpses highlighted in the promos.

Here's another point that needs to be clarified. A WEDNESDAY is not about the train blasts, nor is it similar to MUMBAI MERI JAAN. Sure, terrorism is the wallpaper here, but A WEDNESDAY talks about the plight and power of the common man, the aam aadmi.

The year has witnessed some supremely talented storytellers make their debut, like Rajkumar Gupta [AAMIR], Kunal Deshmukh [JANNAT] and Abbas Tyrewala [JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA]. Now Neeraj Pandey joins the ranks of directors who, one is confident, will be one of those calling the shots in the future.

A WEDNESDAY works like magic because of its gripping plotline. The journey, right from start to end on a fateful Wednesday, keeps you on tenterhooks. And the culmination to this complex tale is what takes this film to dizzy heights.

In short, A WEDNESDAY is amongst the finest -- and bravest -- films to come out in 2008. Just one word to describe it: Remarkable!

A WEDNESDAY tells the story of certain events that unfold between 2 and 6 p.m. on a Wednesday in Mumbai. Events that do not exist in any record.

Flashback: Prakash Rathod [Anupam Kher], Commissioner of Police, Mumbai gets a call demanding the release of four militants in lieu of information on bombs that the man has planted in various parts of Mumbai. At first, Prakash suspects it to be a crank call, but his doubts are dispelled once he actually finds a bomb planted in the police station right opposite his Police Headquarters.

Prakash Rathod is not the type to give up easily. He gets a team of his best men together and taps all his resources. He even hires a young hacker to help his team trace the calls and also the location of the anonymous caller. Time passes by, but no concrete results are evident. Eventually, Prakash Rathod decides to hand over the militants to the anonymous caller. It is then that events take a bizarre turn.



Expect the unexpected in A WEDNESDAY. From the writing point of view to the execution of the written material, writer-director Neeraj Pandey never takes the been-there-seen-that route even once. It does take time to settle down [the multiple stories at the start are not too interesting], but once you do get the hang of things, A WEDNESDAY offers you twist after twist, throws challenge after challenge in those 1.30 hours [yes, it's a short film]. No sub-plots, no songs, no unwanted masala, no unnecessary tracks -- A WEDNESDAY has a story to tell and it tells most effectively.

On the execution front, the camera movement [Jimmy Jib], during Naseer's portions specifically, demands your attention. Cinematographer Fuwad Khan's output is top class even when he captures a chase [Jimmy Sheirgill] on a busy Mumbai street. The editor [Shree Narayan Singh] deserves lavish praises for giving shape to this thriller. During the finale specifically -- Anupam is driving towards the location, while Naseer is packing his stuff -- the parallel scenes are juxtaposed brilliantly. The background score [Sanjay Chowdhury] is stirring.

When your film has two of the finest talents sharing screen space, it only heightens the curiosity. Naseeruddin Shah has delivered several remarkable performances over the decades and the one in A WEDNESDAY easily makes its way into his Top 5 works when you recall his body of work. His outburst in the end -- when he talks about the plight of the common man -- is astounding. The entire audi, one is confident, would break into a deafening applause at this master sequence.

Anupam Kher is equally dynamic. Watch the cold look or catch him face-to-face with Naseer in the finale, if there's one actor who could stand up to a giant of an actor, it's Kher. An outstanding performance indeed!

Every performance in A WEDNESDAY is charged. Jimmy Sheirgill is first-rate as a volatile cop. Of late, the actor has been wasted in insipid roles and it's about time film-makers take a note of this talented actor. Aamir Bashir is superb. Again, this actor has never got his due in feature films. It's our loss, not his! Deepal Shaw plays her part confidently. Chetan Pandit, as the Chief Minister, is effective. Ditto for the actor who plays the main terrorist - Kali Prasad Mukherjee.

On the whole, A WEDNESDAY is cinema at its best. It may not be a Kinng-sized entertainer to lure the audiences in hordes and set the box-office afire, but A WEDNESDAY does pack in king-sized punch. Do yourself a favour: Watch A WEDNESDAY.

Wall Street cheered the Commerce Department report, sending all major indices higher with the Dow Jones Industrial Average scoring its best day in three weeks. Still, few economists saw reason to rejoice. "Since consumer spending is slowing down and the credit crunch is tightening its grip, it is hard to foresee another quarter with such a robust GDP headline for some time," Nigel Gault, chief domestic economist at Global Insight, was quoted in the NYT as saying.


Evidently, rebate checks were not being used to buy new Dell computers last quarter. The computer maker reported on Thursday a 17 percent drop in net profits, triggering a 10 percent sell-off in after-hours trading, the Wall Street Journal reports. The dismal quarter raises "questions about the company's 18-month turnaround effort," the paper says.

Aggravating the blow, Dell's rival, Hewlett-Packard Co., last week reported an impressive 14 percent jump in quarterly net profit. The mixed signals suggest the Dell woes have more to do with a poorly executed turnaround than any clear indication businesses are spending less on technology. Sure enough, Michael Dell said the poor results were "self-inflicted," Business Week reports, as the publication wonders: "Has Dell's Comeback Hit a Roadblock?" What has sunk the computer maker is fierce price competition; Dell's sales were up 11 percent and demand for consumer machines rose higher still to 53 percent, and still margins were down, the WSJ notes. Fortune sums up the quarter more poetically: "Dell bleeds from its own price cuts," the headline blares.

The NYT scooped the field on Thursday with the news that embattled investment bank Lehman Brothers Holdings is set to slash up to 1,500 more jobs, "its fourth round of cutbacks this year." The layoffs would amount to 6 percent of the workforce and could come as soon as mid-September, the NYT reports. As the WSJ notes, job cuts on Wall Street are hardly remarkable these days, but for Lehman, every revelation of bad news holds "a bit more weight." Some on Wall Street are already referring to Lehman in the past tense. Roger Lister, the chief credit officer at credit-rating agency DBRS Inc. gave this chilling assessment to the WSJ: "The downturn is longer than expected. This is an assessment of the extent to which you need these people. Certain businesses may never come back."

Just how bad has 2008 been to Wall Street? Citing Bloomberg statistics, the NYT says Wall Street banks have already cut an astounding 101,000 jobs this year. The toll is probably not goin to end there. "We're not done seeing headcount reductions on Wall Street in this cycle," Jeff Harte, a securities industry analyst at Sandler O'Neill, told the newspaper. Breakingviews adds a further bleak perspective. The banking sector, it says, may be facing "the direst financial mess in three decades," when "about 17 percent of securities-industry workers lost their jobs," and "in New York City, nearly one in four did".

The banking beat is producing all kinds of landmark statistics. The Financial Times reports today the losses Merrill Lynch has racked up in the past 18 months have succeeded in wiping away one-quarter of the profits amassed by the bank over the past 36 years. What is the damage in actual terms? "Merrill has suffered after-tax losses of more than $14 billion as its balance sheet has been savaged by almost $52 billion in writedowns and credit-related losses," the FT begins. And now for the kicker: Between 1971 and 2006, Merrill had accumulated a healthy inflation-adjusted profit of $56 billion, the FT calculates after compiling data from Thomson Reuters.

From New Zealand to New York, tech journalists are gleefully reporting that, no, Steve Jobs is not dead. It started as a classic only-at-a-newswire goof, with Bloomberg for a brief moment on Wednesday publishing a 17-page obituary of the Apple CEO. (It's since been pulled, and Bloomberg has retracted the story, but Gawker mischievously reposts it in all its glory, replete with editorial notes of who to call from Steve Wozniak to Bill Gates to Al Gore.) But by Friday morning the story lives on as the tech press once again revisits the biggest cloud of uncertainty hanging over Apple. As the Seattle Post Intelligencer remarks: "How is Jobs doing after his bout with pancreatic cancer?" With the Bloomberg gaffe as a potential news peg, news rooms are debating: Is it time to call Apple's PR team for an update on Jobs' health? It may seem unseemly to ask, the San Francisco Chronicle ventures, but the tech community wants to know.

The Olesons may have extended store credit to Ma and Pa Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie, but widespread consumer credit is a very recent phenomenon. It began in the 1920s, when expensive consumer durables—cars, refrigerators—were first produced in mass quantities. It wasn't until Bank of America began carpet-bombing California with credit-card applications in the 1960s that the debt wave started in earnest.In the decades since, consumer credit became so pervasive that paying cash became passé. Want a new $32,530 Dodge Ram Crew pickup? Take a lease. Sick of your old house? Get a 100 percent mortgage and trade up. Face lift? Round-the-world cruise? New PC? Three-hundred dollar sushi dinner at Nobu? Whip out that plastic. It was this behavior—the endless willingness of lenders to lend and borrowers to borrow—that kept the consumer economy humming uninterrupted from the early 1990s, straight through the brief recession of 2001, until the credit meltdown of 2007.

But many of the lenders who extended credit recklessly are now acting like a single twentysomething who, after having a few bad dates, takes a vow of celibacy. Students returning to college are finding that student loans have vanished. Retailers who freely extended credit to any customer with a pulse are deploying bean counters armed with sophisticated software to sniff out potential deadbeats. And when higher rates and fees don't deter their borrowers, credit-card companies resort to slashing credit lines. "We predicted there would be some degree of spillover from the mortgage meltdown," said Curtis Arnold, founder of CardRatings.com. "But the credit line reductions by big credit card companies in the last six months have been fairly unprecedented."

This shock to the system may further damage the already-fragile psychology of the consumer. Writing a check or deducting the price of a pair of shoes directly from your bank account packs a much more potent emotional punch than charging the pair of Allen Edmonds loafers on your American Express platinum card. Chalk it up to a concept called "the pain of paying," said Dan Ariely, the author of Predictably Irrational. (It's a concept the parents of his students at Duke University feel every semester.) Imagine that a restaurant, rather than charging $30 per meal, charged 50 cents per bite, with a waiter standing tableside collecting after each chomp. That would be an extremely unpleasant meal. But credit puts a safe distance between the ecstasy of consumption and the agony of payment, and thus makes us feel better. Said Ariely: "If it's more difficult to get credit, it might make people feel more pain of paying and therefore spend less."

The availability of credit also changes the calculus people use to determine what they can afford. Blowing $6,000 on a week in Tuscany might be tough to swing if you have to pay for it all next month. Convince yourself it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you can pay for over three years, and it becomes a bargain. With credit, Saturday night means dinner and a movie. When you pay cash and have a fixed budget, it's dinner or a movie.

The tightening of credit is forcing more people to confront these uncomfortable choices. In the second quarter, credit giant MasterCard reported that the gross dollar volume, or GDV, of credit charges processed in the United States rose just 0.7 percent from 2007, while the GDV of debit charges rose 15.8 percent. The huge retailer Target in late August said that in the second quarter, for the first time in memory, the percentage of sales charged to credit cards fell, while the proportion of purchases made with debit cards rose. That's partially by design, since the company has undertaken an "aggressive reduction of credit lines and significant tightening of all aspects of our underwriting." (Translation: No credit for you!!)


Leverage is an appropriate synonym for credit because it allows you to lift more than you could with simply your own financial muscle. Take away the leverage, and the power lifter becomes a 98-pound weakling. That's clearly a factor in the housing market. In 2007, according to the National Association of Realtors, 45 percent of first-time homebuyers put no money down, and the median first-time homebuyer financed a massive 98 percent of the purchase. But no-money-down mortgages, like Rudy Giuliani's presidential candidacy, began fading in late 2007 and largely disappeared in the cruel winter of 2008. No wonder existing home sales fell 13.2 percent in July from last year while new home sales plummeted 35.3 percent.

In effect, the lack of credit makes things seem more expensive to consumers, even if prices are holding steady. And in a world of scarce credit, consumption is likely to resemble a meal at Dan Ariely's nightmare restaurant: a series of small bites rather than an all-you-can-eat extravaganza.

Global warming has caused the Arctic icecap to retreat from neigbouring continents creating opening a gap

The historic development was revealed by satellite images taken last week showing that both the north-west and north-east passages have been opened by melting ice.

Prof Mark Serreze, a sea ice specialist at the National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) in the US said the images suggested the Arctic may have entered a "death spiral" caused by global warming.

Shipping companies are already planning to exploit the first simultaneous opening of the routes since the beginning of the last Ice Age 125,000 years ago. The Beluga Group in Germany says it will send the first ship through the north-east passage, around Russia, next year, cutting 4,000 miles off the voyage from Germany to Japan.

Meanwhile, Stephen Harper, Canada's Prime Minister, has announced that ships entering the north-west passage should first report to his government. The routes have previously opened at different times, with the western route opening last year, and the eastern route opening in 2005.

The satellite images gathered by Nasa show that the north-west passage opened last weekend and the final blockage on the east side of the ice cap, an area of sea ice stretching to Siberia, dissolved a few days later.


Last year the extent of sea ice in the Arctic reached a record low that could be surpassed in the next few weeks, with some scientists warning that the ice cap could soon vanish altogether during summer.

Four weeks ago tourists had to be evacuated from a park on Baffin Island because of flooding caused by melting glaciers, and polar bears have been spotted off Alaska trying to swim hundreds of miles to the retreating ice cap.

Measurements on August 26 showed an ice cap of just over two million square miles, confirming the second biggest ice cap melt since records began. New of the opening of the passages emerged as the British explorer and adventurer Lewis Gordon Pugh began a kayak expedition to the North Pole aimed at drawing attention to the dramatic impact of melting polar ice.

"I want to bring home to world leaders, on this expedition, the reality of what is now happening here in the Arctic," said the 38-year-old environmentalist in his blog.

"The rate of change is clearly faster than nearly all the models predict, which has huge implications for climate change and how to tackle it."

Meanwhile Prof James Lovelock, of the University of Oxford, has claimed "planet-scale engineering of the climate" may have to be attempted to counter global warming.

On the contrary, the male ideal of a ``man's man'' is someone who is honourable, responsible and committed to his partner, says the study.According to it, most men want to be seen as good fathers and good husbands, not as studs chasing women for sex.

The study which covered eight countries, including the US, Brazil, Germany and Italy, found that for 33 per cent of men viewed being seen as`honourable' as their highest ideal of maleness.

Another 28 percent said being in control of one's life was their ideal of maleness.

A vast majority of them said the topmost male quality was putting love ahead of sex.

Just one percent rated a great sex life as their ideal.

Three percent plumped for career and financial success.


According to Canadian Michael Sand, who led the survey of 27, 839 men across many cultures and age groups in the eight countries, the new study has shattered may stereotypes about maleness.

``Men routinely said (during the survey) that being in good health, having a good family life, having a harmonious relationship with my wife or my partner, is way more important than a successful career, having a nice home, having a satisfying sex life,'' he was quoted as saying by a Canadian news agency.

Sand said,``Being seen as honourable - I think men are telling us that how my community views my integrity and my values system is important to me. They're also saying `I want to be seen as a good father, a successful partner, far more than I want to be seen as a stud'.'

According to him, all these things ``point to the importance -- not in keeping with stereotypes -- of interpersonal relationships to men, as well as to women of course.''

Sand said the study debunks what beer commercials and Hollywood gossip sheets project men to - chasing babes, fleeing commitment, abandoning their kids, and having trouble staying sober.

``Just as we know all women are not Playboy bunnies, we know all men are not ravening sex fiends interested in the next conquest. These stereotypes -- I think we all know they're not real

``This is why it's so important to do research -- to challenge our assumptions,'' said the Canadian researcher.
